How to Stop Hay Fever Impacting Sleep
As Spring rolls into Summer and the warmer weather sets in, it quite often spells the start of allergy season for millions of sufferers. There are over 15 million hay fever sufferers in the UK, all of which shall be dreading the colourful blooms and freshly cut lawns. If you suffer from a seasonal allergy, you might be dreading the looming nights of hay fever impacting sleep.
For many hay fever sufferers, restless nights are a common occurrence during the summer months, however, the accumulation of sleep debt can make the summer months feel like one big blur. The ongoing sleep problems caused by itchy eyes or blocked nasal passages should not be ignored. If disrupted sleep is an issue due to seasonal allergies, follow these following tips:
Drying Clothes and Bedding
If you suffer from hay fever, try to avoid drying clothes and bedding outside during high pollen months. Pollen can become attached to the fabric, which can then become irritable once in contact with an allergy sufferer.
Shower Before Bed
Take a shower before getting into bed, this will wash off any pollen which might be caught on your skin or in your hair.
Keep Windows and Doors Closed
Try and keep windows shut, even through hot weather. By pushing open windows and doors, you’re allowing pollen into your home. Stay cool by placing a tray of ice in front of a fan. The breeze from the fan will pick up cold water from the surface of the tray, creating a cooling mist. Use an Air Purifier
If none of the above tips work, you might want to think about purchasing an air purifier for the bedroom. They work by removing dust, smoke, and bacteria from the air. As well as providing relief from hay fever and asthma, the clear air can also enhance sleep, concentration, and even help skin conditions.
